An inauguration ceremony held on December 11, 1996 was the crowning accomplishment of the Jordan Agricultural Marketing Development Project, spearheaded by Sigma One Corporation in the Research Triangle Park. This facility was developed under contract to USAID for the Royal Jordanian Airlines. The Facility was turned over to the Kingdom of Jordan by two Tarheel diplomats, UNC alumni U.S. Ambassador Wesley Egan and Mr. Lewis Lucke, director of the USAID Mission to Jordan (a Chapel Hill native). The facility was accepted on behalf of King Hussein by Mr. Nasr Al-Lozi, Ministerof Transportation, who in turn placed it in custody of Royal Jordanian Airlines. Also in attendance were Sigma One Corporation President, David Franklin, and Vice President, Marielouise Harrell. Sigma One Corporation has provided technical assistance since 1988 to Jordan’s private sector to enhance exports of high-value produce, such as strawberries, grapes and melons. One key to market expansion in Jordan has been maintaining produce quality from harvest to purchase. The Cold Storage Facility at Queen Alia International Airport completes the cold chain by keeping produce fresh from farm to market. It also eliminates a key bottleneck to increasing Jordan’s presence in the lucrative fruit and vegetable markets of Europe and the Gulf States. The North Carolina firm’s efforts are helping to transform agriculture in the Jordan Valley, making it more diverse and dynamic with expandinginternational ties. Many fundamental improvementswere accomplished in spite of the Gulf War and other hazards.
